Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer travel. While it’s tempting to think your cat will be “fine” for 48 hours with an extra bowl of kibble, this short weekend is actually the perfect “Therapeutic Test Run” for your longer summer vacations.

The Psychology of Absence:

Cats are “place-oriented” creatures. Their sense of security is tied to the predictability of their territory and their social “anchors” (you). When you leave, the “territorial rhythm” is broken. If the first time you leave them for a long period is a 10-day trip in July, the sudden change can trigger stress-induced behaviors like FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease) or psychogenic grooming (over-licking until they have bald spots). A 3-day trip in May allows your cat to practice the “Return Cycle”—learning that even when you leave, a “Replacement Human” arrives to provide resources, and then you eventually return.

The Memorial Day Prep Kit:

Scent Anchoring:

Before you leave, wear an old t-shirt for a day and leave it in your cat’s favorite sleeping spot. Your scent acts as a biological “calming signal,” lowering their cortisol levels even when you aren’t physically present.

The “Quirk Inventory”:

Use this short trip to document your cat’s specific quirks for your sitter. Does she only drink from a running faucet? Does he expect a “treat hunt” at 7:00 PM? These small details are what keep a cat’s stress levels low.

The Tech Dry-Run:

If you use automatic feeders, smart fountains, or cameras, May is the time to check the batteries and Wi-Fi stability. It’s much easier to fix a camera during a weekend trip than it is from another country in July!

Building the Bond:

We love Memorial Day bookings because they allow us to bond with your cat during a low-stakes window. By the time your big summer vacation rolls around, we aren’t “the stranger”—we’re the familiar friend who already knows exactly where the “good” head scratches happen.
